RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) conduct its first meeting and open house regarding the General Plan Update (GPU).

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

Over the last two years, the City has been engaged in the process to initiate the GPU. This meeting is intended as a kickoff event for the anticipated three-year GPU process. The other public event taking place during the kickoff is a City Council Study Session on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at 7 PM at the City Hall Council Chambers to discuss visions for the city and goals for the project. Other meetings held during the kickoff will be with City staff and stakeholders.

The GPU project will be a comprehensive update to the General Plan, which is the City’s blueprint, or constitution, for future development and contains goals, objectives, policies, and programs to guide the community through its next 20 years.

The purpose of this open house is for the GPAC Members, GPU consultant team, and community to meet and launch the project. The consultant team will give a brief presentation on what to expect during the process and the project timeline. There will be a swearing-in of the GPAC Members, the Oath of Office will be administered to the GPAC Members, and City staff will go over the procedures and logistics for the GPAC to conduct its meetings. The process for the selection of a Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will be discussed; however, the selection itself will occur at the next meeting to be scheduled.

There will be many opportunities throughout the process to ensure that equitable outreach takes place and that all voices are heard. These opportunities will include stakeholder interviews, GPAC meetings, Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) meetings, pop-up events, open houses, workshops, festivals, online engagement and surveys, and even a tactical urbanism demonstration project.

Get more information on the GPU and sign-up for notifications at www.culvercity.org/generalplan and learn more about the GPAC at www.culvercity.org/gpac.
