RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council approve the submission of an application for grant funds in the amount of $13,579.00 through the FY 2016 Department of Justice Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program Local Solicitation.


BACKGROUND

Due to anticipated Command staff retirements that will cause a chain of promotions, it is of great importance that the Department focus its efforts on the development of its staff. Strategic planning training for personnel is a key activity for any modern day police organization. This process involves assessments of strengths, weaknesses, roles and responsibilities, as well as preparing for future trends in law enforcement and the surrounding environment.

The Edward Byrne Memorial JAG Program is the primary provider of criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. JAG funds support all components of the criminal justice system. The established JAG list established by the Bureau of Justice Statistics indicates the amount for which each unit of government is eligible to apply.
