RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) receive and file the report regarding the Disability Etiquette Manual created by Girl Scout Sophia Horton.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The Gold Award is the highest achievement within the Girl Scouts of the USA, earned by Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts. Only 5.4% of eligible Girl Scouts successfully earn the Gold Award. Local Girl Scout Sophia Horton approached the Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) in 2022 regarding creating a volunteer training manual for the annual Abilities Carnival and Resource Fair.  At the August 10, 2022, meeting, the DAC approved supporting Ms. Horton in her project. Local Girl Scout Troops have long been the key volunteers who help lead activities for the annual event for kids with disabilities and their families.  The Girl Scout Leaders host a training prior to the Carnival and Resource Fair event, and Ms. Horton has now created the Disability Etiquette Manual (Attachment 1) and video which provide the foundation for this training.  Ms. Horton will be presenting Attachment 2 to the DAC explaining her manual, her research and her Gold Award Project experience.
