BACKGROUND
On January 24, 2022, the City Council adopted ordinance number 2022-001, approving a comprehensive plan amendment, P2021 0174-CPA, subject to conditions of approval and code requirements, to allow the construction of a 3-story community center, up to 12 affordable housing dwelling units, and a reconfigured community garden. The previous community garden was categorized as communal. The plots were rented to community members who met eligibility requirements set by City Council.
At the September 19, 2022 City Council meeting, Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) staff presented background history and possible areas for the community garden relocation. The Council referred staff back to the PRCS Commission to further research potential locations and to engage the community.
PRCS staff is exploring alternative garden options with the PRCS Commission. Next steps include reevaluating garden types and locations with an equity lens in mind, engaging the community and receiving feedback, developing rules for community use, and considering multiple sites for different uses.
Subcommittee members will receive a brief presentation by PRCS staff and discuss the issue.
