RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Disability Advisory Committee (1) consider the nominations for an individual and/or organization for an “Outstanding Service to Persons with Disabilities” Commendation; and (2) select an individual and/or an organization to receive the Commendation from the City Council.

BACKGROUND

Each year, the City of Culver City proclaims October as Disability Awareness Month.  The City Council and the Culver City Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) honor one outstanding individual and/or one organization as part of the Disability Awareness Month celebration.  After open nominations, the DAC selects the honorees and the City Council issues formal commendations at a public meeting.

Submissions for this year’s commendations opened on August 18, 2022. Public notification of the “Outstanding Service to Persons with Disabilities” Commendation nomination period was done by press release, social media posts on Instagram and Facebook and Culver City notification emails to various subscription groups, including Meetings and Agendas - Disability Advisory Committee, Parks, Recreation & Community Service Department Updates, Culver City News and Events, and Culver City Senior Center.  Staff also requested that DAC members reach out to their contacts in the community to encourage nominations. Nominations were made through the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department’s online form, by email or by mail. Individuals who previously received an “Outstanding Service to Persons with Disabilities” Commendation include Marcy Sookne and Lindsay Crain; Community organizations who previously received Commendations include Leaps and Boundz and Mychal’s Learning Place (Attachment 1).
