RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (1) discuss the report from the Asian American Storytelling Ad Hoc Subcommittee for the event program; (2) consider approval of the report’s recommendations and determine next steps; and (3) provide direction to staff if deemed appropriate.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The Asian American Storytelling Ad Hoc Subcommittee would like to recognize Asian American Awareness month in May and recognize the appreciation of Asian Americans through storytelling. The Asian American Storytelling Ad Hoc Subcommittee coordinated a diverse panel of storytellers who will share stories exploring both the challenges and blessings of being Asian American.  The Ad Hoc Subcommittee is planning a facilitated discussion following the Storytelling among the audience and the Storytellers to explore current and historic roots of Anti-Asian Sentiment to create greater equity for all.

The Asian American Storytelling event will take place on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at 7:00pm.  With the return to “in-person” City Council and Commission, Board and Committee meetings in April, this event will be taking place “in-person.” The location for this event will be the Garden Room located at the Veterans Memorial Building.

FISCAL ANALYSIS

The Subcommittee report mentions street banners, which have a cost to create and install of approximately $1548/each, or approximately $4500 for three (3) street banners.  This amount exceeds the funds remaining in the EHRAC budget for this fiscal year, which is $1,500.00.
