BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The Ballona Creek Bikeway Project is a partnership with the Baldwin Hills Conservancy, to improve 1.1 miles of the Ballona Creek Bike Path from Duquesne Ave to National Blvd. Improvements include; adding wayfinding signs, improving accessibility at the National Blvd/Jefferson Blvd and at the Duquesne Ave gateways, planting over 100 trees, replacing the pathway with eco-friendly permeable pavement, installing solar powered lighting, adding lighting under the overcrossings, replacing damaged fencing, and enhancing signage and markings for improved public safety.

The planned upgrades will improve utilization of the Bike Path by active forms of mobility and improve access for persons with disabilities or mobility impairments, will provide for wildlife habitat, and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contamination of water runoff into the Ballona Creek watershed. In addition to delivering habitat and sustainability benefits, the proposed enhancements will allow more bicyclists and walkers to enjoy the extensive connections afforded by this major regional greenway multi-use path, which links to a wide array of important destinations and mobility hubs.

The Ballona Creek Bikeway Project is currently in the design phase and completion is anticipated by August 2022. The design phase includes four public outreach meetings. Construction is anticipated to commence January 2023.

FISCAL ANALYSIS

Ballona Creek Bikeway Project is funded through the Baldwin Hills Conservancy Prop 1 and local match funding. The overall project costs are estimated at $2.8 million.

Staff will provide a project overview and updates and answer questions.
