RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council (1) if desired, approve the use of the City Seal in the design for the Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee award medallion to be provided to Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee award recipients; and (2) provide direction to the City Manager as deemed appropriate.

BACKGROUND

After a successful inaugural year, as part of its approved work plan, the Culver City Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) has created a Community Contributions Award to honor four outstanding individuals for their contributions to Equity and Human Relations in Culver City.

The four recipients will be individuals who have embodied inclusiveness, altruism, and giving through volunteerism and public service to make Culver City a better place for all people to live.

Four award categories: One award will be given to each of the following:

                     An Individual - A Culver City resident or a person employed in Culver City;

                     A Student -  Resident of Culver City or attending a Culver City Elementary, Middle or High School, or West LA College;

                     A Culver City business owner; and

                     An executive director of a non-profit organization serving the Culver City area.

The award nominations are accepted from any Culver City resident, business owner, student, or person employed in the City, who may nominate an individual who embodies these attributes.

The submission of nominations began in September of 2021. The deadline for submissions was on Friday, December 31, 2021. The awardees will be selected in April of 2022.

Each honoree will receive a commemorative medallion at a City Council meeting held in May 2022.

DISCUSSION

Culver City Municipal Code (CCMC) section 1.03.006.A provides “The City Clerk, City Manager, and/or designee shall be authorized to use the City Seal on any resolution, proclamation, certificate or other instrument approved by the City Council or executed by the Mayor.”

The EHRAC is requesting City Council approval to use a reproduction of the City Seal on one side of the commemorative medallion awarded to the recipients as described above.  The other side of the medallion would reflect the name of the recipient, the year, and possibly include other information such as the Committee name and “Community Contributions Award.”
