BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

 

The Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) is presenting this special event to celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a community.

 

This event features speakers Kevin Locke and Charles Alvarez, Tribal Chairman.

 

This event includes a native prayer in Lakota, Lakota dancing and music, student art, and a Native American expression of gratitude. 

 

The agenda for this special event is as follows:

 

I.                     Opening and welcoming from the EHRAC Chair

II.                     Introduction of event and first speaker, Kevin Locke

III.                     A native prayer in Lakota offered by Kevin Locke (whose Lakota name translates to “The First To Arise”). He is an internationally renowned Lakota singer, dancer, instrumentalist and educator.

IV.                     Lakota dancing, music and explanations by Kevin Locke in a short documentary film entitled “The First To Arise”

V.                     Q&A with Kevin Locke

VI.                     Student art representing Indigenous people

VII.                     Introduction of 2nd speaker, Charles Alvarez, Tribal Chairman, Gabrielino Tongva Tribe

VIII.                     Interview with Tribal Chairman Charles Alvarez

IX.                     Q&A with Tribal Chairman Charles Alvarez

X.                     A photo presentation of historical Gabrielino Tongva sites with commentary

XI.                     A Native American expression of gratitude, similar, to a prayer
