RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Equity & Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) receive the presentation in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by Anita Gaur of the Culver City High School Asian Cultural Union Club; (2) discuss and share comments about the presentation; and (3) provide direction to staff if deemed appropriate.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

In 1978, a joint congressional resolution established Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. The first 10 days of May were chosen to coincide with two important milestones in Asian/Pacific American history: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants (May 7, 1843) and contributions of Chinese workers to the building of the transcontinental railroad, completed May 10, 1869.

In 1992, Congress expanded the observance to a month-long celebration that is now known as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. (For more fun facts please visit <https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/sis/resources/fun-facts/aapi.html> )

In honor of the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Culver City student and member of the Asian Cultural Union Club, Anita Gaur, will provide a presentation which will include a video entitled Asian Pacific Heritage Month Information Video.
