RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Equity & Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) receive the report from the Partnership, Education and Public Events Ad Hoc Subcommittee on implementation of work plan tasks; (2) discuss report’s recommendations and determine next steps on implementing work plan; and (3) provide direction to staff if deemed appropriate.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

On March 16, 2021, the Partnership, Education and Public Events Ad Hoc Subcommittee (“Subcommittee”) members Moammar and Valverde met with Culver City Historical Society’s president Hope Parrish and Vice President Denice Renteria. At the March 23, 2021 regular meeting, EHRAC requested that the Subcommittee report back on their meeting with the Culver City Historical Society.    Below is Members Valverde and Moammar’s report of the meeting.

                     Culver City Historical Society is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Culver City government; revenue is from donations;

                     Both Parrish and Renteria mentioned other cities have done historical signage with QR codes which helps tell the story via a smart phone (i.e., City of Orange);

                     Moammar and Valverde shared the vision of having cultural markers/signs/plaques that highlight some aspect of Culver City history that includes or references some form of cultural/ethnic history;

                     They had an interesting conversation about Culver City history:  barley & bean fields, history of the Mexican land owners, history of Japanese families being displaced during WWII, Holy Cross Cemetery, Sebastian’s Cotton Club, Fox Hills made up of stables and horses, most land owners and many city streets are named after developers and land owners (i.e., Lindblade, Mc Manus, etc.), origin of Fiesta La Ballona, etc.; and

                     Culver City Historical Society is interested in collaborating with the EHRAC and requests more specifics such as the themes (i.e., early settlers, ranchos, indigenous, music/film, etc.).
