RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the Cultural Affairs Commission consider the information provided herein and at the meeting and make comments as appropriate.


BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

Alexey Steele was appointed Culver City Artist Laureate by the City Council on January 13, 2020 for a two-year term ending December 31, 2021. At that time, it was anticipated that Mr. Steele would be focused on promoting artmaking in the city and steering the community to its own values and artistic expression while also developing his own work. A specific plan for the two-year Artist Laureate was to be developed in conjunction with City staff, the program coordinator (Alicia Ide) and the CAC Artist Laureate Subcommittee (Chair Tania Fleischer and Commissioner Jeannine Wisnosky Stehlin) to ensure a realistic approach with tangible outcomes given the allocated time and resources available.

With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health orders, Mr. Steele has responded in numerous ways to the need of the Culver City community, emphasizing art as a vehicle for emergency relief.
