RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends the Cultural Affairs Commission (CAC) receive updates from staff on the FY 2019-20 Cultural Affairs work plan, an overview of the proposed FY 2020-21 Cultural Affairs work plan priorities, and provide comments and/or make a recommendation to the Administrative Services Director and the City Manager, as appropriate.

 

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

As was the case in prior years, each of the City’s Commissions, Boards and Committees have an opportunity to provide input related to the budget and work plan for FY 2020-21 (deadline is March 26, 2020) before the City Manager presents his proposed budget to the City Council on Monday, May 11, 2020.  The City Council is scheduled to receive individual department presentations on next year’s proposed budget and work plan on March 2 and March 3,  2020.  The FY 2020-21 budget is scheduled for adoption on June 22, 2020.  CAC members are welcome to attend any of these meetings.

Staff will provide a status update on the FY 2019-20 Cultural Affairs work plan followed by an overview of the FY 2020-21 Cultural Affairs work plan priorities at the CAC meeting on February 18, 2020.

 

ADOPTED FY 2019-20 CULTURAL AFFAIRS WORK PLAN

                     Continue to implement and refine the Art in Public Places, Historic Preservation and Performing Arts Grant Programs; Continue implementation of the Artist Laureate Program; Work with consultant, CAC and City Council to identify and recommend selection of a new Artist Laureate.

                     Work with Creative Economy consultant, CAC subcommittee and community stakeholders to identify and present short- and long-term options to City Council.

                     Review the Historic Preservation Program and recommend updates as appropriate.

                     Continue the Open House Program.

                     Continue with the Cultural Venue Enhancement Project.

                     Continue to partner with Community Development on the Economic Development Implementation Plan and the General Plan Update.

                     Continue to work with the Cultural Affairs Foundation Board to clarify and revise Memorandum of Understanding.

 

PRELIMINARY OVERVIEW OF FY 2020-21 WORK PLAN PRIORITIES

                     Continue to implement the Art in Public Places Program, Historic Preservation Program and Performing Arts Grant Program.

                     Continue to implement the Artist Laureate Program including launch of public programming and activities.

                     Create a plan for strategic promotion of Cultural Affairs programs.

                     Host a Culver City ArtVenture bus tour for Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in June 2021 and begin planning for Olympics in 2028.

                     Continue Cultural Venue Enhancement Projects at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

                     Implement plans for Creative Economy engagement and pursue related partnerships. 

                     Continue to partner with Community Development Department on the General Plan Update and the Economic Development Implementation Plan.

                     Continue to partner with Culver City Arts Foundation to raise additional funds for the Work Plan Programs.
