RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Commission discuss the planning and implementation of Community Conversation - Topic #10.

BACKGROUND

In 2011, the PRCS Commission began hosting “Community Conversations” which are presentations on topics of major relevance to the community.  They are planned, organized and implemented by the members of a Community Conversation Ad Hoc Subcommittee appointed by the Commission.  The Commission designed the Community Conversation series as one that has minimal fiscal impact on the City.

In general, the procedure for hosting the presentations has been as follows:

Commissioners identify, contact and make arrangements with the presenter(s).

Presenters volunteer their expertise on the selected topic.

Commissioners create a flyer for the Community Conversation and email it to PRCS Department staff for distribution.

PRCS staff distributes the flyer in two to three email blasts, posts it on the City’s website and does outreach on social media to publicize the Community Conversation.

PRCS staff makes copies of the flyer and posts it at various Culver City parks and facilities

The Community Conversations that have been held previously include:

1.                     February 1, 2011 - “Words Matter I” (Bullying)

2.                     June 7, 2011 - “Elder Abuse - How it Affects You, Your Family & Your Neighbors”

3.                     May 1, 2012 - “Healthy Living in Tough Times:  Identifying and Coping with Stress from Financial Hardship”

4.                     April 2, 2013 - “Food vs. Mind and Body”

5.                     November 19, 2013 - Words Matter II’ (Bullying)

6.                     September 1, 2015 - “Character and Community Building in Youth Athletics”

7.                     May 2, 2017 - “Growing Up Intercultural in Culver City:  A Student-Based Conversation on Race and Culture”

8.                     April 18, 2018 - “Everyone Deserves to Feel Safe, a Community Conversation for Teens Led by Peer Educators from The Talk Project.”

9.                     November 13, 2018 - “The Power of Community - What We Can Do to Stop Bullying.”

DISCUSSION

The Community Conversation - Topic #10 Ad Hoc Subcommittee was formed on August 7, 2018.  During recent Commission meetings, Ad Hoc Subcommittee Members Vice Chair Mohammed and Commissioner Amezola put forward affordable housing as the topic of Community Conversation - Topic #10.  At the March 5, 2019 meeting, the Commission decided to hold the next Community Conversation on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 7:00 PM in the Rotunda Room of the Veterans Memorial Building at 4117 Overland Avenue in Culver City.  Also at that meeting, the Ad Hoc Subcommittee Members received consensus from the PRCS Commission to place a discussion item regarding the planning and implementation of Community Conversation - Topic #10 on this evening’s Agenda.
