RECOMMENDATION
Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) discuss and provide input on engagement with the West Los Angeles College to expand active transportation accessibility.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The West Los Angeles College, located in unincorporated Los Angeles County, is a two-year, public community college in the western Baldwin Hills, adjacent to Culver City. The College attracts students across the County and has a total enrollment of 11,915 students (2010).
Albeit in outside Culver City jurisdiction, WLAC can be accessed only from Culver City. Owing to the large student body this has considerable impacts on the surrounding transportation infrastructure. There is no bicycle infrastructure directly leading to the College.
In the Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Plan, currently being drafted, Overland Avenue between Culver Boulevard and Freshman Drive is being considered as an opportunity corridor for future bicycle infrastructure which connects the heart of Culver City to the College.
Currently, there is no coordination with the College to build present or future capacity for active transportation accessibility. Due to the increasing strain on the surrounding streets, there is a need to build a relationship with the school’s administration and identify the types of infrastructure improvements and education opportunities required in and around the school to increase active transportation mode share.
MOTION
That the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee discuss improvements the committee would like to see in the area surrounding WLAC in Culver City and opportunities to work with WLAC to improve active transportation accessibility.
