RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Civil Service Commission (Commission) approve the revised classification specification and recruitment bulletin for Traffic Engineer.


BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

Over the last several years the job responsibilities of Traffic Engineer have been filled through contract services. The Traffic Engineer is primarily responsible for providing technical oversight of traffic related studies and projects. In the FY 18-19 budget, City Council approved the Public Works Department's request to add this position back into the budget.

After the budget was adopted, the Public Works Director/City Engineer reassessed the position, and recognizing that the mobility landscape is rapidly changing, made a recommendation to the City Manager to enhance the position to include responsibilities related to mobility. The proposed position, Mobility and Traffic Engineering Manager, would head a newly created division focusing on mobility and traffic related trends in an effort to anticipate community needs and identifying mobility issues pertaining to development, as well as continuing to oversee the City's street meter and residential permit parking programs.
