RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Commission take any or all of the following actions, if desired:  (1) receive and file reports from the Community Conversation (“Everyone Deserves to Feel Safe”) Ad Hoc Subcommittee and representative appointees to outside associations and City Committees; and/or, (2) dissolve the Community Conversation Ad Hoc Subcommittee; and/or, (3) form of new Ad Hoc Subcommittee(s); and, (4) appoint two Commissioners to the newly-formed Ad Hoc Subcommittee(s).

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

Updates from PRCS Commission Representative Appointees

Staff has prepared this report as a standing Agenda Item to give the Commissioners an opportunity hear updates from their colleagues.  The current list of Commission appointments, including meeting and contact information, is provided as Attachment 1.

PRCS Commission Ad Hoc Subcommittees

An “ad hoc” subcommittee serves only a limited or single purpose.  It is not perpetual, and it is dissolved when its specific task is completed.  With this in mind, the Commission dissolved all of the Fiscal Year 2016/2017 Ad Hoc Subcommittees at the August 1, 2017 meeting.

On April 18, 2018, the Commission hosted Community Conversation - Topic #8, titled “Everyone Deserves to Feel Safe.”  “Everyone Deserves to Feel Safe,” was a peer-led Community Conversation for teens to discuss and gain information regarding the cycle of sexual violence.  Teen peer educators from “The Talk Project,” an interactive program sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women | Los Angeles, facilitated the discussion.  The members of the Community Conversation Ad Hoc Subcommittee, Commissioners Amezola and Mohammed, will be presenting a report on the event at this evening’s meeting (Attachment 2).  If the Commission so desires, the Community Conversation Ad Hoc Subcommittee may be dissolved at this evening’s meeting, or, the Commission may wish to take this action at a future date.

An Ad Hoc Subcommittee may be formed at any Commission meeting, as long as the discussion has been placed on the Agenda in advance.  Once an Ad Hoc Subcommittee has been created, updates are given by Members during the Standing Agenda Item, “Updates from the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission Ad Hoc Subcommittees and Representative Appointees to Outside Associations and City Committees.”  In some cases, a separate, specialized Agenda Item is prepared and presented so that the full Commission can participate in discussions and decisions on the Ad Hoc Subcommittee’s topic or event.

FISCAL IMPACT

There is no fiscal impact associated with the discussion of this Agenda Item.
