RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the Finance Advisory Committee (FAC) discuss conducting a review of other cities’ fees for ridesharing services to provide findings/recommendation to the Parking and Traffic Council Subcommittee.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

With ridesharing/ride-hailing services increasing in popularity across the nation, many municipalities have begun examining policies to impose fees or taxes on these companies and/or passengers.  Such services are assumed to increase demand on local streets and roads, worsening traffic and reducing public transportation ridership.  For these reasons, taxes/fees to assist in paying for local public transportation and infrastructure improvements has become a topic of heightened conversation nationally and among states and cities.

At the April Parking and Traffic Council Subcommittee Meeting, it was recommended that the FAC take a look at the fees some cities are imposing on Uber and Lyft (and ridesharing services generally) and report back with findings/recommendations.
