RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the City Council approve the non-monetary City Sponsorship of Leadership Culver City (Program).
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
This nine-month Program is presented through the partnership of West Los Angeles College, the Exchange Club of Culver City, Culver City Chamber of Commerce, and the Center for Non-Profit Management and will be held at West Los Angeles College, beginning in September 2018. On April 16, 2018, Council Member Clarke received City Council consensus to agendize a discussion to have the City of Culver City become a supporting organization for the Program. City Council approval is necessary in order for the Program to use the City logo and for City staff to distribute program and application information through the City’s email notification system (Gov Delivery), and through the City’s website and Social Media channels.
Background about the Program
According to the Program’s background information:
This is a nine-month program in community leadership for individuals who live and work in Culver City that focuses on civic literacy and engagement around community assets and issues. An introduction to civic literacy through a series of monthly activities/exercises that expand the participants’ knowledge of Culver City: its governance functions, its businesses, its services, and its people.
There will be a full-day Orientation in September followed by one-day sessions each month (except December). The half-day sessions will take place on Fridays and will cover the following topics: Mobility/Transportation; Development/Housing; Business/Economic Development; Education/Workforce; Non-Profit Organizations/Social Services; City and Public Agencies. At the end of the program in May, participants will be asked to make oral presentations on how they feel they can make impactful engagement with issues, initiatives and programs in Culver City.
Participation will be limited to 15 individuals in order to maximize opportunities for discussion and engagement with guest speakers and presenters. Council Member Clarke indicated that it is possible that some Department Heads may be invited to speak on one of the panels, and that the time commitment would be a total of two hours or less.
