RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission (Commission) receive and file an informational item regarding the preliminary cost estimates and conceptual plans and for the addition of playground shade structures at Culver City parks.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
At the September 5, 2017 meeting, the Commission requested that staff conduct research and present a report regarding options for the installation of shade structures at those Culver City playgrounds that are in need of shade. In hopes of presenting this information on site to participants of the September 22, 2017, Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission Tour of Culver City Parks and Facilities (Parks Tour), staff prioritized this task above other pressing Fiscal Year 2017/2018 Work Plan responsibilities. Unfortunately, the Parks Tour was cancelled due to a lack of quorum. However, an informal tour was held and preliminary cost estimates (Attachment 1) and conceptual plans (Attachment 2) were presented to those in attendance.
Once funding has been identified for the installation of one or more playground shade structures, staff recommends the following priority order of projects:
Priority No. Playground(s)
1. Culver City Park
2. Veterans Memorial Park
3. Blair Hills Park
4. El Marino Park
5. Tellefson Park
6. Culver West Alexander Park
7. Syd Kronenthal Park
8. Lindberg Park (note: a cost estimate is attached but the conceptual plan for this playground area is not available at this time.)
Regarding those Culver City playgrounds that are not listed above, the Fox Hills Park playgrounds already have shade structures (see page 5 of the Conceptual Designs), there is no playground at Carlson Park, and the playground at Blanco Park is owned by the Culver City Unified School District.
FISCAL ANALYSIS
There is no fiscal impact associated with the discussion of this Agenda Item.
