RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration & Juneteenth Celebration receive and file the report regarding the 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration budget.


BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

On January 15, 2025, the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration & Juneteenth Celebration Advisory Committee (Advisory Committee) reviewed the money allocated for the Martin Luther King Jr. and Juneteenth Events for Fiscal Year 2024-2025 and discussed potential increase in services for each event.

On February 19,2025, a budget letter (Attachment 1) was submitted for the Advisory Committee's review with the recommendations of an addition $10,000 dollars for each event. The budget letter suggested that the additional $10,000 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration would be used for offering a diverse and high-quality meal to attendees and to include a richer cultural experience with live performances, speakers, and other activities.

The Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department submitted the approved budget letter to the City Council on May 14, 2025 in advance of the budget meetings that were held on May 19 and May 20, 2025.
