BACKGROUND: Washington Boulevard between La Cienega Boulevard and La Cienega Avenue has been exhibiting severe roadway pavement stresses on the travel lane adjacent to the landscaped medians. The landscaped medians were installed in 1997. Soil investigations conducted by the on call geotechnical engineering firm PSI found that the sub grade soil conditions consist of clay with high moisture content. In some cases clayey sub grade soil can pump and cause pavement failures due to repetitive heavy traffic loads on the structural section. The Washington Boulevard Pavement Rehabilitation Project P 838 will address the sub grade conditions and reconstruct roadway pavement sections and median curbs.
