RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council (1) adopt a statement supporting union workers' rights to strike, acknowledging the historical relevance of unions and what they have done for labor in America, and encouraging all sides to quickly resolve the current strikes; and (2) provide direction to staff on how to disseminate the statement.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

At the July 10, 2023 City Council Meeting, Vice Mayor McMorrin requested and received City Council majority consensus to consider adopting statements of support for writers and hotel workers on strike. Subsequently, at the August 14, 2023 City Council Meeting, the City Council discussed a statement and provided direction to staff regarding the wording of a statement. The City Council directed staff to return to the City Council with a draft statement.

Staff has prepared the following statement for the City Council's discussion and consideration:

"The City Council of the City of Culver City supports union workers' rights to strike. Throughout America's history, labor unions have fought for and won benefits that have improved the lives of working people, including better wages, safer working conditions, health benefits, and sensible working hours.
