Fulwood (07/17/08) RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council (1) authorize the acceptance of $151 983 in grant funds awarded by the 2006 Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) to purchase Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and (2) approve the purchase of SCBA from the vendor selected by the Southern California Area Personal Protective Equipment Consortium (SCAPPEC) . BACKGROUND: Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) is a crucial component of the Fire Department s protective equipment ensemble. SCBA provide a high level of respiratory protection during structure fires and hazardous materials incidents. The Fire Department s current SCBA inventory was purchased in 2001. The useful service life of this equipment is 10 years. Additionally the current inventory does not meet certain national standards Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) after September 11 2001. There is a need to replace the Fire Department s SCBA inventory and to this end the Fire Department has been aggressively seeking grant funding to secure the new equipment.
