RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the Cultural Affairs Commission (CAC) (1) consider a proposal from Artist Laureate Katy Krantz regarding Phase II of a temporary art project for the vacant store at 11029 Washington Blvd.; (2) provide comments as appropriate; and, (3) make a recommendation to the City Council.


BACKGROUND / DISCUSSION

On September 11, 2023, the City Council passed a motion authorizing the City to purchase property at 11029 Washington Blvd. that had been operating as a gun store. The City Council's motion included ensuring there was community involvement and repainting of the building. At this time, staff anticipates that the building will remain standing through June 2025.
On November 21, 2023, the CAC received a proposal by Artist Laureate Katy Krantz for a temporary art project at the building consisting of two phases. Based on that presentation, CAC recommended that the City Council approve Phase I of the temporary art project consisting of a painted mural on three sides of the building.
