(SanCon) to rehabilitate sewer manholes throughout the City. BACKGROUND: A sewer manhole is a maintenance access point from the surface of the ground to the sewer main. Sewer manholes are primarily constructed of brick and mortar and have a steel ladder. Bricks are inert and do not deteriorate. However the hydrogen sulfide gases generated by the sewage flow will cause the mortar to disintegrate between the bricks. Without the bonding of the mortar to the bricks structural failure of the manhole could result causing bricks to fall into the sewer main leading to blockage of sewage flow and in the worst case scenario collapse of the street above the manhole. DISCUSSION: Public Works Staff identified 27 sewer manholes in need of rehabilitation.
