RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommend the Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) receive and file the report from the Public Works Department regarding parking-protected bicycle facilities.


BACKGROUND

The Public Works Department Mobility and Traffic Engineering (M&TE) Division is responsible for the design and operation of the City's streets and traffic signals. The Mobility Element of the Culver City General Plan, along with the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Plan, establish a long-term vision of a transportation system that provides safe, comfortable, and connected options for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving. These plans emphasize improving access to everyday destinations, enhancing safety for all users, and making walking and bicycling viable choices for more trips.

As the City implements these adopted policies through capital projects and corridor improvements, parking-protected bicycle facilities have emerged as one of the tools used to improve safety and comfort for people bicycling while preserving on-street parking. In this configuration, on-street parking is shifted away from the curb, and a bicycle lane is placed between the parking lane and the sidewalk, with a buffer separating bicyclists from moving traffic.
