BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The Environmental Programs and Operations (EPO) Division has created two new tools to help community members learn more about making sustainable choices.

Utilizing Beverage Container grant funding from CalRecycle, staff developed an augmented reality game featuring the spokesmonster, Stan. After being named through a competition that garnered hundreds of votes, Stan launched to teach people how to accurately sort different beverage containers into either the recycle or trash containers. The interactive game gives users advice if they choose the incorrect bin.

The EPO division has also created a Sustainable Solutions tool that allows users to input how much time, energy, and money they want to devote to reducing their carbon footprint. The tool will come up with suggestions for the user to implement in their lives. The tool also features local events such as Ballona Creek clean ups, Household Hazardous Waste collection, and e-waste drives through events.
