BACKGROUND: In light of the acquirement of the new fleet of compressed natural gas powered equipment including transit buses sanitation trucks and other types of vehicles by the Equipment Maintenance and Fleet Services Division and the recent vacancies within that division the Mechanic classification specification has been updated. DISCUSSION: The Transportation Department has purchased new equipment and vehicles that require experience in inspecting maintaining and repairing alternative fuels and compressed natural gas engines (CNG). The major changes to the classification specification include the addition of the alternative fuels language as follows: Inspects troubleshoots and diagnoses all types of diesel gas and alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG) engines; Knowledge of gasoline diesel and alternative fuel engines; and Experience with alternative fuels is desirable.
