Fulwood (10/18/2006) Staff recommends the City Council authorize the appropriation of $127 020.00 for the purchase of six 12 lead cardiac monitor units in the amount of $127 020 and training of fire department personnel in their use and approve the related budget amendment. (This entire sum will be reimbursed by the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency as per the Cardiac Care Program Equipment Agreement. A budget amendment requires a 4/5ths vote. BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION: On September 5 2006 the Board of Supervisors approved the ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center Program. The goal of this program is to identify 9 1 1 cardiac patients experiencing a STEMI type of heart attack and transport them to an approved STEMI Receiving Center (SRC) hospital for definitive diagnosis and treatment. A STEMI patient s outcome can improve if definitive treatment is administered quickly. As a result of this program approval each advanced life support (ALS) unit must be equipped with 12 lead electrocardiogram (EKG) capability and staffed with paramedics trained in its use.
