RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Cultural Affairs Commission (CAC) receive and file public comment relating to the creation of the position of Honorary City Poet Laureate.


BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

In response to direction of the City Council, the Cultural Affairs Commission is considering the proposal for the City Council to create the position of Honorary City Poet Laureate. As part of its consideration of the issue, the CAC created the Ad Hoc Honorary City Poet Laureate Subcommittee at its meeting on June 9, 2015 and appointed Commissioners Small and Williams to that subcommittee. The subcommittee's purview includes:

* Formulating a recommendation to the City Council whether it should create the position of Honorary City Poet Laureate.

* If recommending that there should be such a position, developing guidelines for selecting an Honorary City Poet Laureate; and,

* Developing a description of the duties of the position.

The subcommittee intends to make a presentation to the CAC at its meeting on September 8, 2015 so that the CAC can make a recommendation to the City Council. The subcommittee already has information prepared by Dr. Janet Hoult on a position of Poet Laureate but is seeking comments from the public at this time so that these can be taken into consideration before the subcommittee brings this item back to the full C...
