BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The Environmental Programs and Operations Division (EPO) of the Public Works Department plans to apply for a grant focused on enhancing community access to compost through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). EPO will be seeking City Council approval on August 26, 2024 to submit the application.

The proposed project is focused on community organics bins to be installed in areas convenient to locations lacking organics service. The bins will be locked and only able to be opened with codes to mitigate contamination. Community members will receive the codes to these bins for their use. The City will procure an in-vessel composter that will remain on City property. The City will partner with an organization to collect organics from these bins and process in the in-vessel. The compost will then be made available to community members.
