Fulwood (06/14/07) RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council discuss the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and consider funding for the Committee in the amount of $2 000.00 for Fiscal Year 2007/2008. BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION: In 2005 the City Council appointed two members of the City Council as a Council Subcommittee to work together with staff and members of the public to plan and implement an event celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to commemorate his important teachings of tolerance equality and peace. After months of planning and with a modest budget of $500 the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee (MLK Committee) presented its first event in January 2006. Building on the success of the first event the MLK Committee expanded the prior year s event to a three day commemoration in 2007. Once again the event was well attended. The MLK Committee is already working hard on planning the January 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. event. Given the continuing success of this event I am proposing the City Council consider increasing the budget for the MLK Committee from $500 to $2000 in FY 07/08. In the absence of the har...
