RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Finance Advisory Committee (FAC): discuss the Affordable Housing Speaker Series; and (2) approve holding a Regular or Special Meeting of the FAC to facilitate the next Affordable Housing Speaker Series event at a date to be determined.


BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

On April 12, 2023, the FAC established the Affordable Housing Ad Hoc Subcommittee to formulate a speaker series on the economics of affordable housing and identify potential speakers. On September 14, 2023, the City held its first Speaker Series event on Affordable Housing featuring Dr. Stewart Gabriel, Distinguished Professor of Finance and Arden Realty Chair at UCLA Anderson School of Management, Director of UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate, and Co-Director of UCLA Howard and Irene Levine Affordable Housing Development Program. Dr. Gabriel discussed his latest research, as well as challenges and opportunities in housing policy in a conversation with FAC Chair Andrew Lachman and answered questions from audience members.
