P R O C L A M A T I O N NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Women’s Health Day 2005 WHEREAS, an estimated 211,300 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2005, and 43,300 women will die of the disease; and WHEREAS, an estimated 1,600 cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2005, and 400 men will die of the disease; and WHEREAS, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce suffering and deaths caused by the disease; and WHEREAS, the City of Culver City has made a commitment to doing its part in reducing the number of deaths related to Breast Cancer by participating in the Mayor's Campaign Against Breast Cancer for the past eight years; and WHEREAS, as part of this ongoing effort, on October 29th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Women's Health 2005: The Art of Staying Healthy, a bi-lingual conference for English and Spanish speaking women and their families, will be held at the Veterans' Memorial Building in Culver City; and WHEREAS, the free conference is co-sponsored by the Center for Healthy Aging with funding from the Avon Foundation in cooperation with the City of Culver City Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Culver City Senior Center, local hospitals and other community-based agencies. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Culver City hereby declares Saturday, October 29th as Women's Health Day in Culver City and the month of October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and urges all residents to attend the free conference to get the facts about breast cancer and breast health.
