Dr Doris Pichon Givens Named Interim President at WLAC
The Los Angeles Community College Board of Trustees yesterday voted to
select Dr Doris Pichon Givens, as the interim president of West Los Angeles
College Dr Givens most recently served as the president of Los Angeles City
College
She came to Los Angeles from Spokane Community College,
where she served as President from June 2000 until August 2003
Dr Givens was a student at West Los Angeles College and later received an
A A degree from Grossmont Community College in San Diego County, BA and
MS degrees from San Diego State University, and the Ph D degree in
Community College Leadership and Public Affairs from the University of Texas at
Austin
She was an instructor at San Diego City College for 13 years where she taught
psychology and sociology primarily in the Black Studies Department that she
chaired for 8 years She entered into administration as a result of her efforts to
assist Students of color achieve their academic goals A highlight in her career
as president at Spokane Community College shared governance was fully
implemented At LACC her accomplishments included establishing a culture of
honesty, complete review of the Facilities Masterplan, and fully opening up the
shared governance process to include all constituents at the college
In 2000, Dr Givens was recognized as an outstanding alumna from Grossmont
College, San Diego State University and the University of Texas In addition to
serving as program coordinator and department chair at San Diego City College,
Dr Givens also served as the dean of human arts and sciences at Palomar
College in San Marcos from 1992-2000 prior to becoming president at Spokane
At Spokane established a number of collaboratives to fund programs One of
the most celebrated was an agreement with the United States Navy to train all of
its electronics recruits •
