RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council (1) approve a one-year general services agreement with FoodCycle for edible food recovery and community composting services, in an amount not-to-exceed $130,000; and (2) authorize the City Manager to approve two additional one-year terms for an amount not-to-exceed $80,000 annually.


BACKGROUND

SB1383, California's Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy, is a statewide law effective in 2022 that aims to reduce methane emissions from landfills and increasing food recovery, the source of much of the organic matter that sits in landfills. To reduce food waste and help address food insecurity, SB 1383 requires that by 2025 California will recover 20 percent of edible food that would otherwise be sent to landfills, to feed people in need.
