RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends that the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS)
Commission select possible dates and time for scheduling: (1) tours of the parks, to
which the members of the City Council will be invited; (2) a tour of recreation
programs; and, (3) a tour of the Museum of Tolerance.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
Park Tours
Each year staff accompanies the Parks and Recreation Commission on one or more
tours of City Park facilities. City Council members are always invited to join the
Commission on these tours. The purpose of the tours is to familiarize appointed and
elected officials with the conditions at the public parks. During the tour, elected and
appointed officials have the opportunity to ask questions of staff and staff has an
opportunity to inform officials of issues arising in Culver City Parks.
Last year, the two park tours were held on Sundays during the Fall. Staff
recommends that the Commissioners check their calendars and provide staff with
potential park tour dates and times; staff will then check Council members’
availability during those dates and times.
The Commission may also wish to discuss the itinerary for each of the tours . A map
displaying the location of the parks within Culver City is included as Attachment A. A
list of the names and addresses of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Department’s major parks is as follows:

Recreation Program Tour
For the first time this year, staff recommends that the PRCS Commission select
possible dates and times for a tour of some of the Department’s recreation
programs. A late afternoon-early evening time on a weekday might give the
Commission the best opportunity to view a wide variety of programs. An excerpt of
the Summer Edition of Culver City Living that highlights the various recreation
programs is provided as Attachment B.
Museum of Tolerance Tour
Since Human Relations is within the PRCS Commission’s purview, staff
recommends that the Commissioners select possible dates and times for a tour of
the Museum of Tolerance. Past Commissions have gone on this tour as a group as
a means of increasing awareness of issues of prejudice and discrimination. Visitor
information excerpted from the Museum of Tolerance website at
www.MuseumofTolerance.com is provided as Attachment C. Attachment C includes
a flyer for the current exhibition, Drawings from Darfur, please note that although
the flyer lists an end date of December 29, 2008, the exhibit is running through
July 30, 2009.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The only cost is nominal and is related to the use of one or more of the PRCS
Department vans to transport tour participants.

crisis in Darfur. While collecting testimonies, she gave children aged 6-18 paper and pencils and asked them about their
dreams for the future and their memories from the past. Drawings from Darfur is a collection of these children’s drawings
and testimonies, which depict memories of the shocking atrocities committed against these young witnesses.
