RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Juneteenth Celebration Advisory Committee approve one event format for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2025.
BACKGROUND
The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Juneteenth Celebration Advisory Committee (Advisory Committee) is tasked with advising Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) staff with the planning of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration for 2025. With the timeline of the event being four months away, staff has put together various event formats for the Advisory Committee to choose. The event format will determine most decision making for the event and allow staff to move forward quickly with confirming space, contracts, and guests.
DISCUSSION
Staff is recommending one of three event formats to the Advisory Committee. When considering the best format for the event, it is best to consider the potential to engage the community effectively through promoting dialogue aligned with the celebration’s goals and the practicality of each option, including budget, venue, staffing, and overall execution within available resources.
Some items that are consistent to all formats include:
• The date of the event: This is currently under evaluation from staff, who are doing research to help determine the best date.
• Gerald C. Rivers: He is considered the voice of Martin Luther King Jr. and has traditionally appeared at the Culver City Celebration.
• Community Booths: PRCS Staff will work to have various City departments and non-profit organizations represented at the event.
• Number of attendees: This will be determined by the venue, which will be based on availability of the date.
The below chart shows the details of each of the three formats:
