RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration & Juneteenth Celebration Advisory Committee Approve the History and Education Ad Hoc Subcommittee’s Informational Display Boards on Voting Rights.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

The History and Education Ad Hoc Subcommittee was established July 23, 2025. This is an opportunity for them to present the Informational Display Boards focused on Voting Rights (Attachment 1), which will be displayed at the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2026 event in the Rotunda Room.

The History and Education Ad Hoc Subcommittee chose to focus on the history of voter suppression in America as an educational supplement to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message.  The boards are arranged chronologically and gradually shift from back and white to color as the viewer approaches the current time.  The headings are:

                     The Struggle to Vote

Registering to Vote: A Dangerous Experience

Suppressing the Black American Vote through Violence

The Voting Rights Act of 1965

                     Gutting the Voting Rights Act

                     New Barriers to Voting (A)

                     New Barriers to Voting (B)

                     Modern Voter Suppression Tactics (A)

                     Modern Voter Suppression Tactics (B)

                     A Looming Threat to Voting

                     The Way Forward

                     The Solution
