PROCLAMATION HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering economic development and local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing livability; and, WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people; and, WHEREAS, historic preservation has significantly contributed to Culver City’s unique character among Westside cities, to the City’s economic vitality and its regional and national recognition as a forward looking community that celebrates its history; and, WHEREAS, 2006 marks the 80 th anniversary of the Washington Building which is designated locally as a “Landmark” structure and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1991; and, WHEREAS, March 2006 marked the dedication celebration of a sculpture of Harry Culver which was attended by his grandson, Dr. John Battle, his wife Tammie, and Harry Culver’s four great-grandchildren; and, WHEREAS, the Culver City Historical Society and City Historian continue to partner with the Culver City Unified School District through the Living History program and continue to provide walking tours of historic sites in Culver City and to display publicly local memorabilia such as Robert Gragg’s wood carvings; and, WHEREAS, "Sustain America - Vision, Economics, and Preservation" is the theme for National Preservation Month 2006, cosponsored by the City of Culver City and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby proclaims May 2006 as Historic Preservation Month in Culver City, and calls upon the people of Culver City to join their fellow citizens across the United States in recognizing and participating in this special observance.
