RECOMMENDATION:
That the City Council approve the Revised Classified Classification Specification for
Mechanic.
BACKGROUND:
In light of the acquirement of the new fleet of compressed natural gas powered
equipment, including transit buses, sanitation trucks and other types of vehicles, by
the Equipment Maintenance and Fleet Services Division and the recent vacancies
within that division, the Mechanic classification specification has been updated.
DISCUSSION:
The Transportation Department has purchased new equipment and vehicles that
require experience in inspecting, maintaining and repairing alternative fuels and
compressed natural gas engines (CNG). The major changes to the classification
specification include the addition of the ‘alternative fuels’ language as follows:
Inspects, troubleshoots and diagnoses all types of diesel, gas and alternative
fuels, such as compressed natural gas (CNG) engines;
Knowledge of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel engines; and
Experience with alternative fuels is desirable.

This knowledge is essential to the job, as repairing and maintaining the City’s fleet of
compressed natural gas vehicles constitutes approximately 60% of a Mechanics job
duties.
On October 5, 2005, the Civil Service Commission approved the revised classified
classification specification for Mechanic.

Occupants of this classification are m the classified service They perform skilled journey level work in the repair overhaul and
maintenance of light and heavy motorized equipment The incumbents of this classification are expected to independently
perform the full range of overall maintenance service and repair activities on the City s entire complement of motorized
equipment
Supervision Received and Exercised
The positions assigned to this classification report to a Equipment Maintenance Supervisor Responsibilities may include
supervision of Mechanic Assistants and Equipment Service Workers
Essential Job Duties
The following tasks are essential for this position Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks or may
perform similar related tasks not listed here
1 Conducts preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on motorized and non motorized vehicles and equipment using
analyzers pressure gauges chassis charts and factory manuals for all types of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles
2 Troubleshoots and repairs all electrical problems including complete diagnosis of electronic and computer controlled
systems Reads and understands vehicle maintenance manuals and appropriate electrical schematics including computer
flow charts and graphs
3 Troubleshoots monitors and repairs all types of hydraulic systems Implements hydraulic flow charts overhaul and repair
procedures for hydrostatic drive systems including cylinders pumps and all related components
4 Troubleshoots inspects and repairs drive lines including manual transmission clutches front wheel drive components C
V joints and differentials services and repairs automatic transmission transmission axles and transverse types of
transmissions
5 Troubleshoots inspects and repairs steering systems including power steering units gear boxes under suspension
components rack and pinion alignments and McPherson types of suspension
6 Inspects. troubleshoots and diagnoses all types of diesel anEl-gas and ahem** fidat4; suel

automatic and manual transmissions and clutches
7 Troubleshoots inspects and repairs all types of fuel systems including fuel injection injection pumps and all related

8 Performs all aspects of cooling system repairs including but not limited to proper system diagnoses water pumps
radiator thermostat and all related cooling system components mcluding engine related problems
9 Troubleshoots inspects and repairs ignition systems including computerized electronic diesel and all other related
ignition systems
10 Troubleshoots inspects and repairs brake systems including hydraulic vacuum and pneumatic using the proper diagnostic
tools and equipment
11 Troubleshoots and repairs charging and starting systems including proper diagnosis of voltage and amperage readings and
battery conditions
12 Troubleshoots and repairs air conditioning and heater systems including diagnosis of compressors thermostats and
climate control vacuum control and computer ventilation control systems
13 Practices safe work habits promotes motivation and morale among subordinates

Training and Experience
Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge skills and abilities
would be qualifying A typical way to obtain the knowledge skills and abilities would be completion of high school and three
ears of journe level experience re airing and maintaining a variety of light medium and heavy motorized equipment
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Require vision (which may be corrected) to read small print
Require the mobility to stand stoop reach and bend Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and
manipulate small objects
