RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission (PRCSC) host Community Conversations Topic #7 - “Growing Up Intercultural in Culver City: A Student-Based Conversation on Race and Culture” and participate in the discussion as deemed appropriate.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
On July 7, 2015, the PRCSC first formed the Community Conversations - Topic #7 Ad Hoc Subcommittee. On August 2, 2016, the current Ad Hoc Subcommittee members, Commissioner Garland and Commissioner Rickards were appointed by the PRCSC. On January 10, 2017, the PRCSC finalized the title for Community Conversations Topic #7 as “Growing Up Intercultural in Culver City: A Student-Based Conversation on Race and Culture.” Over the past several months, the members of the Ad Hoc Subcommittee have been planning and organizing this event.
During the week of April 24, 2017, the following additional public notification was done for this Community Conversation: (Flyer Posting and/or Distribution) Various Culver City Facilities and the Culver City Unified School District Office; (Publicity Slides in English and Spanish) Culver City’s Public TV Channel; (Culver City Website Postings) Culver City Highlights, Culver City News and Public Notifications pages; (Social Media Postings) Facebook, Twitter and Nextdoor; (Email) Subscribers of Press Organizations or What your Government is Doing (819 recipients); (Courtesy Notification Email) Subscribers of City Council, City Council/CCUSD Board Liaison Committee, Civil Service Commission, Cultural Affairs Commission, Culver City News and Events, Culver City Senior Center, Disability Advisory Committee, Homelessness Committee, Parks, Recreation & Community Service Department Updates, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission, or Planning Commission (7,221 recipients).
Tonight’s Community Conversation includes a panel discussion moderated by Carlos Valverde, Ed. D., featuring students from Culver City High School Intercultural Studies. The goal of the Community Conversation is to encourage discussion regarding this very important topic and to promote a greater understanding of how these Intercultural Studies students experience being part of the Culver City community. Additional commentary on the topic will be provided by notable community leaders, followed by an open discussion between participants and the public.
