RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council discuss and provide direction to the City Manager regarding the adoption of a statement of support for union workers currently on strike, including but not limited to Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Unite Here Local 11 (hotel workers).

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

At the July 10, 2023 City Council Meeting, Vice Mayor McMorrin requested and received City Council majority consensus to consider adopting statements of support for writers and hotel workers on strike.

WGA Writers’ Strike

On May 2, 2023, the WGA, representing 11,500 screenwriters, went on strike over an ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

If the City Council chooses to support the WGA writers during the strike, the City Council may consider this statement of support or provide other direction:

“The City Council of the City of Culver City supports the WGA writers in their protest during contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.”

Unite Here Local 11 (Hotel Workers) Strike

On July 2, 2023, Los Angeles-area hotel workers went on strike demanding pay increases and improved benefits. Unite Here Local 11 represents 15,000 workers at more than 60 major hotels in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

If the City Council chooses to support Los Angeles-area hotel workers during the strike, the City Council may consider this statement of support or provide other direction:

“The City Council of the City of Culver City supports the  Los Angeles-area hotel workers union in their protest during contract negotiations with hotel employers.”

SAG - AFTRA Strike

On July 14, 2023, subsequent to the City Council’s direction to bring back a discussion item regarding support of WGA and Unite Here Local 11, the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG - AFTRA) also went on strike.

The City Council may wish to provide additional direction regarding statements of support for any or all of these labor groups.

FISCAL ANALYSIS

There are no fiscal impacts to discuss and/or adopt positions of support for WGA writers and the hotel workers union.
