City of Culver City, California City Council Agenda Item Report RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the City Council amend the Street Tree Master Plan (STMP) to change the designated street tree from Chinese Pistache to Chinese Flame Tree along Carson Street between Ince Boulevard and Higuera Street. BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION: On January 28, 2008, the City Council amended the Street Tree Master Plan (STMP) in accordance with the Parks and Recreation Commission’s recommendation to change the designated street tree along Carson Street between Higuera Street and Ince Boulevard from the Australian Willow to the Chinese Pistache. This change was requested by the residents after the Engineering Division Staff had worked closely with the Carson Street residents between Higuera Street and Ince Boulevard through several meetings and advisory surveys regarding the replacement of the street trees last year. On July 28, 2008, the City Council awarded a construction contract to Imperial Paving for the reconstruction of Carson Street between Higuera Street and Ince Boulevard. The work commenced on September 15, 2008 and is anticipated to be completed in December 2008. On September 15, 2008, staff received a petition signed by multiple property owners on Carson Street to change the designated street tree from Chinese Pistache to Chinese Flame Tree. The City’s arborist confirmed that the Chinese Flame Tree is suitable for Carson Street. On October 7, 2008, as prescribed in the STMP amendment process, the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended amending the Street Tree Master Plan to change the designated street tree along Carson Street between Higuera Street and Ince Boulevard from the Chinese Pistache to the Chinese Flame Tree. Public Notification All Carson Street property owners between Ince Boulevard and Higuera Street were mailed a notification postcard on October 3, 2008. The postcard is attached for your reference. FISCAL ANALYSIS: There is no additional cost for changing the street tree from Chinese Pistache to Chinese Flame Tree.
