RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends the City Council approve the allocation of funds for the 2014
Culver City Performing Arts Grant Program as recommended by the Cultural Affairs
Commission (CAC).
BACKGROUND:
The Culver City Performing Arts Grant Program was established in 1994. The
Culver City Municipal Code (CCMC) stipulates that no more than 25% of the money
deposited into the Cultural Trust Fund in the prior fiscal year be available for
”performing arts” in the current fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2013/2014, $40,000 have
been allocated and $15,000 will be allocated from a contribution made in 2013 by
Sony Pictures Entertainment. The total available allocation is $55,000 for the 2014
Performing Arts Grant Program.
DISCUSSION:
On October 16, 2013, 16 grant applications were reviewed by a peer review panel.
Commissioners Regina Klein and John B. Williams, who sit on the CAC Ad Hoc
2014 Culver City Performing Arts Grant Program Subcommittee, observed the panel
process and concurred with the recommendations. On November 19, 2013, the CAC

confirmed the proposed grant awards and made a recommendation that they be
approved by City Council.
The overall quality of the proposals was excellent this year and each of the 16
applicants was recommended for a grant. The total amount recommended for
awards is $55,000. Should the City Council award the grants this evening, staff will
work closely with the grant recipients on their promotional plans for their
performances.
The November 19, 2013 staff report for the Cultural Affairs Commission is attached
as well as a brief overview of the sixteen applicants (ranked from highest to lowest)
and a summary of panel recommendations.
FISCAL ANALYSIS:
The total amount recommended for the 2014 Performing Arts Grant Program awards
is $55,000. The funding includes Cultural Trust Fund monies, as allocated pursuant
to the CCMC, and $15,000 from Sony Pictures Entertainment’s annual contribution
to the City.
