RECOMMENDATION

 

Staff recommends that the Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) receive and file the Disability Awareness Month events plan for October 2023 with amendments if any.

 

 

BACKGROUND

 

Culver City has traditionally celebrated Disability Awareness Month in the month of October each year. Culver City PRCS staff plans the month’s events with the assistance of the Disability Advisory Committee (DAC).

 

Staff has prepared this report as an Agenda Item to give the Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) members an opportunity to review and discuss this year’s Disability Awareness Month events plan for October 2023. This plan was prepared by the Disability Awareness Month Planning Ad Hoc Subcommittee which was created at the regular meeting of the DAC on April 12, 2023. At this meeting, the committee also voted to hold the Abilities Carnival indoors at the Culver City Senior Center on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

                     Proclamation - Disability Awareness Month

                     Commendation - Jazz Hands for Autism and Achievable Foundation

                     Resource information material available at meeting

 

Regular DAC Meeting

Disability Programming

                     Dances for the Developmentally Disabled - Friday, October 13

                     Boo! On Your Doorstep - October 10 and 17

o                     Inclusive of Halloween goodie bags will be given away

 

Culver City High School

                     Wheelchair basketball demonstration on October 17 - donation traditionally made by Exchange Club

                     Culver City High School Optional Art Project - Staff contacted Carlos Valverde to inquire about feasibility on September 7

                     Disability Awareness Month Display Case at Julian Dixon Library and Culver City High School

o                     Resource information material available to display

 

Marketing & Publicity for Disability Awareness Month in October 2023

                     Social media posts with educational information for Disability Awareness Month

                     Sharing information of events and resources available within the area with Culver City Crossroads, Culver City News, Culver City Observer and YMCA
