PROCLAMATION
DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH
OCTOBER 2005
WHEREAS, the month of October is designated Disability Awareness Month throughout the United States to further the
livelihoods and independence of people with disabilities, while highlighting the progress made through the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1990; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Culver City takes pride in the quality of life enjoyed by all of its citizens,
regardless of gender, race, religion or experience with disability and continuously strives to promote awareness and understanding
of the needs, potentials, and demonstrated abilities of our neighbors, friends, and co-workers who experience physical and mental
challenges; and
WHEREAS, the City of Culver City has received national and local acclaim as a model for accessibility, programs, and
services to individuals with disabilities by fulfilling its obligations to the spirit, intent, and implementation of the Americans with
Disabilities Act, including all provisions for equal employment opportunities and removal of physical barriers to access and
participation in City programs and services; and
WHEREAS, the City of Culver City has involved its citizens by forming the Disability Advisory Committee who advise the
City Council and staff of methods to address the housing, employment, transportation, recreational and independent living needs
of residents with disabilities through a wide array of programs, services and projects.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Culver City, California hereby proclaims
the month of October 2005, as “Disability Awareness Month,” and carries forth the message of equal opportunities envisioned in
the Americans with Disabilities Act throughout the community. We further encourage all residents to participate in the Parks,
Recreation & Community Services Department and Disability Advisory Committee activities planned during this month.
