RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration & Juneteenth Celebration Committee (Committee) approve the educational components and theme name for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration as recommended by the members of the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration History & Culture Ad Hoc Subcommittee.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
The Committee is being presented with educational components and options for a theme name for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 11, 2025. These items are recommended by the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration History & Culture Ad Hoc Subcommittee. The subcommittee has developed a program centered on Dr. King's enduring legacy and message, with two potential themes for the committee’s consideration: The Many Faces of Martin Luther King, Jr., or Brotherhood and Beyond... the Message of Martin Luther King, Jr., both themes convey the ideal that Dr. King’s messaging was more than seeking civil rights. Additionally, proposing a community video competition (1 minute or less) inspired by Dr. King's quotes as recommended in attachment 1.
MCJC Advisory Committee Ad Hoc Subcommittees
An “ad hoc” subcommittee serves only a limited or single purpose. It is not perpetual, and it is dissolved when its specific task is completed. An Ad Hoc Subcommittee may be formed or dissolved at any Advisory committee meeting, as long as the discussion has been placed on the agenda in advance. Once an Ad Hoc Subcommittee has been created, updates are typically given by Members. By consensus of the Advisory committee, a separate Agenda Item is sometimes prepared and presented on a specific Ad Hoc Subcommittee’s topic or event.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact associated with this discussion.
