RECOMMENDATION

The Subcommittee will receive and discuss a presentation by the Better Food Foundation made together with their partners the Plant Based Treaty and Center for Biological Diversity. The presentation will focus on meeting Culver City’s GHG Reduction Goals through plant-based food policy and advancing the goals of the Plant-Based Treaty.

BACKGROUND/DESCRIPTION

The Better Food Foundation is a non-profit organization working to accelerate the shift to more sustainable and compassionate food systems by advancing plant-based food solutions while reshaping cultural narratives that influence food choices. Using behavioral science, the Better Food Foundation is building a strong, collaborative movement to educate, influence, and scale solutions that make sustainable choices easier and possible for people, animals, and the planet.

The Center for Biological Diversity believes that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature - to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, the Center for Biological Diversity works to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive.

The Plant Based Treaty organization is a global grassroots campaign fighting climate change by focusing on the food system. They advocate for plant-based food systems through policy change with global leaders, as well as leaders in local municipalities. Representatives from the Plant Based Treaty came to the February 27, 2025 and the June 5, 2025 Sustainability Subcommittee meetings. The Sustainability Subcommittee recommended to City Council and City Council in turn at their November 10, 2025 meeting (1) approved a resolution that urges the United State of America to support a Plant Based Treaty; (2) authorized City staff to provide educational outreach about the benefits of plant based diets; and (3) authorized City staff to include language on special event permits and facility reservations “encouraging plant based foods if this event or reservation includes meals or refreshments”.
